Giving to Eastern University

Students who Receive Scholarships from the Eastern Fund:

Mitch Thomas

Class: 2012
Hometown: Wilmington, DE
High School: Thomas McKean
Major: Youth Ministry

What is your favorite aspect of Eastern?
The community that is shared between everyone here: students, staff, and faculty alike. I also love that it is a smaller campus, which enables you to get to know more people and create more friendships

How helpful are the scholarships that you receive with your attendance at Eastern?
Just like many of the other undergrads, the scholarships are a huge help in being able to attend Eastern, with the tuition as high as it is. It’s always a helpful blessing to have assistance with completing something as important as a Bachelor’s degree. My appreciation goes out to all of those who have chosen to give to the Eastern Fund. Thanks a ton!

What activities are you involved with outside the classroom?
I am a member of the Men’s Soccer team. I have been playing soccer my whole life, and the opportunity to play at this level is such a blessing to me.

How is Eastern shaping you?
Overall, Eastern is impacting my life immensely, especially through my spiritual growth. I have loved learning from professors who are very knowledgeable about the Word of God, as well as all other subjects that they teach at Eastern.

What are your plans after graduation?
I hope to work in a camp setting where I can incorporate ministry and sports. I have been playing sports my whole life and I would love to use sports as a tool for ministering to youth.

Amber Sims

Class: 2011
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
High School: Friends' Central School
Major: Business

What is your favorite aspect of Eastern?
The close-knit Christian community. Being among a body of believers 24/7 is so encouraging because I know there is always someone I can go to if I need to be uplifted, or need a word of prayer. I also love that our faith plays such a vital part in our studies.

How helpful are the scholarships that you receive with your attendance at Eastern?
Nine months before starting my first-year, my dad passed away of cancer, putting my family in a tough financial situation. However, through the aid I receive from school, I am able to remain a student and continue to grow here on Eastern’s campus. I am so incredibly grateful for the people who give to the Eastern Fund and assist students, like me, who they don’t even know.

What activities are you involved with outside the classroom?
I am an RA which takes up a large amount of my time, but it has been an absolutely rewarding experience. I am also a Spanish tutor in the Cushing Center for Counseling and Academic Support (CCAS). Outside of Eastern, I volunteer with my church youth group and other community service projects.

How is Eastern shaping you?
Eastern has had a big hand it shaping me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually between freshman year and now. In my studies, professors have pushed me not only to be a good student, but to be a better person by going out into the community and making a difference that truly matters. My walk with Christ has also been strengthened immensely during my time here.

What are your plans after graduation?
I feel called to attend Nursing school and pursue a career as a maternity/neonatal ward nurse.
