Eastern University uses the information you submit to us for the sole purpose of providing the service you requested. We do not share information about individual website visitors with any other person or entity. Eastern University generates reports about the volume of visitors, variety, timing, and other statistical information about traffic to our website for internal use to provide a better site for our visitors and to communicate with visitors regarding offerings and opportunities at the University.   We use reasonable precautions to keep any personal information collected secure and follow industry-standard precautions and procedures in the transmission and storage of electronic data. Specifically, the Eastern University website provides protection by a secure server and security protocol (Secure Socket Layer) when requesting information. Secure communication means that information you provide, such as your password or account number, is encrypted so that it can’t be read or intercepted by others.

However, we are not responsible for any breach of security resulting from an individual user's computer security failures. Purpose of the Website

The chief purpose of the University’s Alumni website is to advance the University’s mission, brand, and message(s) to core constituents (i.e. alumni, donors, students, their families, trustees, churches, organizations, friends).

This will be done in a manner that is: 1) dynamic and user-friendly and can readily adapt to meet the diverse and changing needs of its constituents, and 2) provides targeted and user-friendly interaction (e.g. requests for information, online giving, etc.) with key constituents.

A secondary purpose is to provide information to the campus community (i.e. alumni, parents, faculty, staff, administration, students, trustees). This will be done in a manner that is relevant, fresh, and engaging (i.e. mission centric, current information, and easily navigable).

The strategic direction for and use of the website will be established and monitored by the University.


What data does the University collect?

We collect information you provide, like your name, email address, and postal address when you sign up to receive emails from us, matriculate as a student, or make a donation. We also collect information about your use of our website, including your IP address, how much time you spend on the site, and what you like or view.

Information collection

Eastern University may collect information from a user, with the user's permission, for the purpose of providing various services or improving the overall content and user experience of the website. This information may be shared with other persons or departments within the university to provide a requested service but will not be shared with any third-party without your express consent.

The only exceptions would be in order to conduct normal university business (for example: providing credit card information to a payment processor to complete a payment transaction) or when Eastern University is legally required to disclose information in response to a court issued subpoena or legally permissible inquiry by a governmental agency or regulator.

In the case of alumni records, if you have disclosed ethnicity and denomination to the university, we keep this information. This allows us to let you know about specific events which may be of interest to you. For example, we may send information about denominational conferences, or other events.

In some circumstances, we also receive information about you from third parties that provide us with data to help us understand how we can provide the best experience for our alumni and donors and how to best connect with you. This information includes your updated contact details (so that we don’t waste the University’s money sending mailings to the wrong address) and causes you’re passionate about (so that we can tell you about events in which you may be interested). We only receive information you have made publicly available.

If you reside in the European Union:

We use your contact information to send you direct marketing, only if you have opted in to receive mailings from us. We will only process your personal data to send you direct marketing if we have your consent.

Fundraising is essential to our organization’s survival. To help us fundraise more efficiently (leaving us with more time and resources for the important work we do), we engage third parties to provide us with information about you that give us insight into your propensity and ability to give to support the mission of the university. These companies do this using only publicly available information about you such as real estate records, charitable and political contributions, and business ownership from sources such as Dunn & Bradstreet, LexisNexis Real Estate, and Marquis Who’s Who. We use this information to target or segment our direct mailing and donation solicitation amounts – there are no other consequences of this profiling. When you give us your personal information in connection with making a donation, note that we will also use this information (never your financial information) for internal reporting and analysis.

Note that we will not delete an alumnus/a or donor record, but will remove all data except name, city, state, and educational data. We will mark this record with a message that indicates no contact should be made and the information is private. We do not delete records entirely because we periodically audit our records to be sure that we have all alumni in the database and at some future date, it would likely be added back to the system without the preferences being known. The record will be flagged so that the information is not inadvertently changed or modified by other users in the future.

Server Logs

Eastern University's web hosts collect and store information sent by your web browser. This information includes:

• Internet Protocol (IP) address associated with the device in use such as a personal computer, hand-held device or the firewall or proxy server of the user's network
• Date and time the web browser made the request
• Address (URL) of the page or file requested
• Address (URL) of the "referring page," the page the browser loaded immediately before the request
• “User Agent" information, which usually includes information about the browser software and operating system the computer or device is currently running
• General technical data about Eastern's server health and activity at the time of the request

This information does not reveal personally identifiable information but allows Eastern to analyze trends in how university systems are being used. This information, including reports generated from the information, is stored indefinitely by the university. Reports may occasionally be shared with third party vendors for further analysis. By having this information available, Eastern is able to improve the performance and user experience of the Eastern website.


Eastern may use "cookies," small text files placed on your computer's own hard disk drive by university systems, which make it possible for those systems to determine if a specific computer has made previous requests. They do not collect or store any personally identifiable information, and Eastern does not combine information collected through cookies with other personal information to determine who you are. Secure Web services

When using web services provided by Eastern, you may be asked to authenticate or log on, using a user name and password. Eastern provides user names and initial passwords to campus community members. Eastern provides user names and initial passwords to friends of the university for certain services upon completion of a registration process. Users will be required to change their initial password and may also be required to change it periodically thereafter. Passwords are stored in an encrypted or scrambled format while residing on university systems.

Information transferred between your web browser and university systems during the use of web services is encrypted. To provide this capability, Eastern uses a network protocol known as Secure Socket Layer (SSL), a certificate-based 128-bit encryption protocol that establishes a secure Internet session and ensures that the information you submit is accessible only to you and university systems. 

Eastern web services require the use of a "session cookie" to facilitate the establishment of a session. A session cookie stores unique identification data that allow Eastern to confirm that you are the only person university systems are communicating with during this session. This cookie only exists for as long as you are logged on to the session. Without the session cookie, you will not be able to use the web services provided by Eastern. If you prefer to not accept cookies in general, you can specify an exception in your web browser settings for the domain "". A "log off" button is provided to terminate your session and further protect your private information.


Outside links

Eastern University's website content may link to content located on Internet servers not owned or affiliated with Eastern. These third-party websites are neither monitored nor controlled by Eastern. As a result, this policy does not extend to those sites.

You are able to upload and share a photo as part of your profile, which can be viewed by alumni and fellow members.

The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations manages a database that uses the highest industry standards for data security and privacy, including PCI compliance. We take our responsibility for data security and confidentially very seriously.

Eastern University maintains security by applying patches for all known software vulnerabilities. We also use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption technology where possible to protect the transmission of information submitted to us. All data is stored electronically by Blackbaud, the premier provider of fundraising software. Secure data such as financial data and social security data (where present) is masked and encrypted. Such information is retained only for legitimate business purposes. User rights to the system are restricted by two-step authentication and by process or role within the institution. Data is stored indefinitely; we do not purge data because we maintain historical data for reporting purposes and for connecting relationships within our database. For example, we have many Legacy Students whose parents or grandparents have attended the college or seminary.
